WINTER SPORTS
Authentic Signed Winter Sports Photos, Framed & Mounted Displays
Winter sports such as skiing (including alpine skiing), figure skating and skeleton racing are competitive sports played on snow or ice. Competitors compete in events such as the Winter Olympic and Paralympic Games, and some winter sports have their own World Cups and World Championships.
Alpine skiing has been contested at every Winter Olympics since 1936, and has made champions out of people such as Franz Klammer, who was a gold medallist at the 1976 Winter Olympics in Innsbruck. His other victories within the sport include dominating the downhill event for four consecutive World Cup seasons (1975-1978 inclusive) and he has 26 race wins in total; 25 downhill and 1 combined. Chemmy Alcott has competed in all five disciplines in the sport; downhill, super G, slalom, giant slalom, and combined. She has competed in four Winter Olympic Games to date, debuting in 2002 at Salt Lake at the age of 19, and seven FIS World Championships. She has been overall Senior British National Champion seven times (1999, 2002, 2003, 2005, 2007, 2008, 2009).
The first ever winter sport included in the Olympics was figure skating (1908) and since then it has seen stars such as Jayne Torvill and Christopher Dean become household names as British (7 gold), European (4 gold), Olympic (1 gold) and World Champions (4 gold). In the 1984 Sarajevo Winter Olympics, they won gold and became the highest scoring figure skaters of all time. After 1980, they never came less than first place in any competition they entered with the exception of the 1994 Winter Olympics. They retired their ice skates in 1998, until 2006 when they reunited to perform on ITV’s Dancing on Ice. Three-time World medallist Robin Cousins also boasts a gold medal for the 1980 Winter Olympics in Lake Placid, and won gold in the European Championships in Gothenburg in the same year.
Skeleton racing became a permanent fixture of the Winter Olympics in 2002, and in 2010, Amy Williams became the first British individual gold medallist at a Winter Olympics for 30 years. In 2014 and 2018, Lizzy Yarnold won gold in two consecutive Games, making her the most successful Olympic skeleton athlete of all time. She also won the Skeleton World Cup (2013-2014) and had gold medals for both the World and European Championships.
