nside forward Willie Wallace joined the Hearts team in 1961, replacing Alex Young. Under manager Tommy Walker, his goal scoring saw him become top scorer for the team for four consecutive seasons from 1923-63 to 1965-66. He helped Hearts win the 1962-63 Scottish League Cup and the team came within a goal of winning the 1964-65 Scottish League.

In 1966, he was bought by Celtic manager Jock Stein for a fee of £30,000. Within six months, he became a Scottish footballing legend as Celtic became the first ever British team to win the European cup in 1967. The team were dubbed the ‘Lisbon Lions’ and the era was considered the greatest in the club’s history. During the time Willie Wallace was with the Lions, the team won the League Championship in each season he was there, as well as the Scottish Cup in 1967, 1969 and 1971, and the League Cup in 1968 and 1969. 

In total, he played 234 games for the club and scored 135 goals. He also played for Scotland, and was capped 7 times for them and four times for the Scottish League XI. Willie Wallace and Scotland defeated England at Wembley in 1967. After his success with Celtic, he went on to play for Crystal Palace for a brief period before returning to Scotland with Dumbarton.
