Jayne Torvill and Christopher Dean are British, European and Olympic World Champion ice skating dancers.
They won their first trophy in 1976 and got a 5th place finish at their first Olympic Games in Lake Placid in 1980 Winter Olympics.
Michael Crawford was the fourth member of the team along with their trainer. He became their mentor and helped them to create their 1983 and 1984 Olympic routines and taught them how to act. He was present with their trainer at the ringside when they won their Olympic Gold Medal receiving twelve perfect 6.0s and six 5.9s from every judge with their Bolero routine at the Sarajevo 1984 Winter Olympics. They turned professional following the 1984 World Championship
They retired from competitive skating in 1998 and did not dance again together until they were enticed out of retirement to take part in ITV’s Dancing on Ice, where celebrities and their professional partners figure skate before a panel of judges. Jayne and Christopher perform a dance routine at the beginning of each show and help to train the dancers, appearing throughout the show with advice and comments.
They decided to leave the show in its ninth series in 2014 finishing marking the 30th anniversary of their Olympic gold win for their Bolero performance. However, there are rumours they may return to Dancing on Ice in 2017 if it returns to ITV as the show “wouldn’t be the same without them”.
