Richard O’Brien is most famous for writing the musical The Rocky Horror Show, which has remained in continuous production since 1973.
After starring in several stage productions in his early career, including Hair and Jesus Christ Superstar, he wrote The Rocky Horror Show with the help of director Jim Sherman, and within weeks of opening it became a Box Office smash and a regular at the West End. The musical was a comedy parody of science-fiction and B-rated horror films at the time, and was such a success that Richard O’Brien wrote a film adaptation, The Rocky Horror Picture Show, in 1975, which he starred in as Riff Raff, the handyman
The Rocky Horror Picture Show quickly gained a cult following and renowned international success, and both the musical and film are still extremely popular to this day. In 1981, Richard O’Brien wrote and starred as Dr. Cosmo McKinley in a follow-up film, Shock Treatment, which included many of the original Rocky Horror characters and became a stage musical in 2015.
Richard O’Brien’s other achievements including presenting four series of the popular game show The Crystal Maze, where contestants would complete a series of challenges set to different periods of human history, and his voice appearance as Lawrence Fletcher in the Disney Channels Phineas and Ferb throughout the early 2000s.
