Philip Glenister is an English actor known for his part as DCI Gene Hunt in the series Life on Mars and also in its sequel Ashes to Ashes.
Philip attended drama school at the Central School of Speech and Drama, following encouragement from his sister in law Amanda Redman. He has appeared in various TV series including Minder, Ruth Rendell Mysteries, Heartbeat, The Chief and Silent Witness.
Philip plays the part of Detective Chief Inspector Gene Hunt in the fictional story of Sam Tyler, a policeman who is hit by a car in 2006 and awakens in 1973 to find himself working for a predecessor of the GMP at the same station and location as in 2006 but one rank lower than his rank of DCI in 2006.
The title Life on Mars is a reference to David Bowie’s single, ‘Life on Mars’ and the series is due to be repeated on the Drama channel in April 2017.
Philip has played the role of Trevor Gunn a PE teacher in David Walliams comedy series Big School and had a leading role in From There to Here a BBC drama about the aftermath of the IRA bombing in Manchester in 1996.
He has also presented the series For the Love of Cars with fellow car enthusiast Ant Andstead, restoring classic cars including a Mini Cooper, Land Rover and a Triumph Stag. The series ended after 6 episodes with all classic cars being sold at a London auction.
