Jim Carter is an English actor, mainly known for his role as Mr Carson in ITV historical period drama Downton Abbey.  He has earned four nominations for Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Drama Series. Jim attended Ashville College, Harrogate where he was head buy in his final year and went on to attend University of Sussex studying law.  He dropped out of University after 2 years and joined a fringe theatre group in Brighton.  He began acting professionally in the early 1970’s and was asked if he hadn’t become an actor, what would he have done professionally, he said he wouldn’t have pursued law.  He was offered £5 a week to join the fringe theatre group The Brighton Combination and said it was like a door opening and he has never looked back.  He states he has never earned a penny from doing anything apart from acting; he has never had another job.
