The career of James Fox began in the 1960s, where he appeared in films such as King Rat, The Chase and The Servant (1963), the latter of which saw him scoop a 1964 BAFTA for Most Promising Newcomer. He played salesman Jimmy Smith in the 1967 American hit film Thoroughly Modern Millie. The film was the ninth highest grossing film of the year and was nominated for 7 Academy Awards and 5 Golden Globes.
After playing the lead role in the film Performance (1970), James Fox took a break from acting, and only starred in one film in that decade (No Longer Alone, 1978) He returned to screens in the eighties and starred in a mixture of films and television programmes.
More recently, he played Verruca’s father, Mr. Salt, in the 2005 remake of Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, amongst big names such as Johnny Depp and Helena Bonham Carter. The film was a box office success and grossed $475 million worldwide. He continued to be cast for many successful films and in 2009 he was cast as Sir Thomas Rotherham in the Sherlock Holmes movie.
Alongside his successful film career, he also had roles in popular television series such as Downton Abbey where he appeared as William Allsopp in the 2013 Christmas special, as a one-off character.
