Helen Shapiro’s singing career began when she was just fourteen, when her first single ‘Don’t Treat Me Like A Child’ went to No.3 in the UK charts (1961). Her next two singles ‘You Don’t Know’ and ‘Walkin’ Back to Happines’ were both No.1 hits. They both sold over a million copies and earned her two gold discs by the age of fifteen. She broke the record at the time for being the youngest ever female UK chart topper, and she was dubbed an overnight sensation.
Helen Shapiro was voted ‘Britain’s Top Female Singer’ and The Beatles famously played as a support act on one of her tours. In what is now known as ‘The Beatles Winter 1963 Helen Shapiro Tour’, The Beatles were fourth on an eleven-act show headed by Helen Shapiro; this was the first time The Beatles ever toured.
In 1962, Helen Shapiro played the lead female role in the movie ‘It’s Trad, Dad’ and also played herself in the film ‘Play It Cool’. In total, she released 5 albums and 35 singles, 5 of which peaked in the UK Top Ten.
Her later career was focused around the stage, and she played the role of Nancy in Oliver! on London’s West End, as well as musicals Cabaret and Seesaw. In 1993, her autobiography ‘Walking Back to Happiness’ was published.
