Former England first class cricketer Ashley Giles had a legendary career as a both a bowler and a batsman. In total he played 54 test matches and 62 One Day Internationals for England prior to his retirement. Domestically, he played for Warwickshire County Cricket Club throughout the whole of his 14-year career, and it wasn’t long before he was snapped up to play cricket for the national team.

In 1996 he gained a regular place with Warwickshire, and almost immediately won the Denis Compton Award for being ‘Most Promising Young Player’ at the club. He was awarded his One Day International debut against Australia in May 1997, and played his first test match for England against South Africa in 1998. Between 2000 – 2006, Ashley Giles was England’s first choice bowler, and his notable achievements included taking eight wickets against Sri Lanka in the winter of 2003, hitting 18 and 17 and keeping England in the series. In 2004, His 100th test wicket at Lord’s against Brian Lara went down in history, and he was named Man of the Match.

In the 2005 Ashes against Australia, Ashley Giles famously captured the wickets of all the top Australian batsmen at least once, and contributed a test-best 59 runs and a century partnership with Kevin Pietersen to ensure an overall 2-1 series victory. Ashley Giles was awarded an MBE in the 2006 New Year Honours for his vital role in the Ashes.
