Impressionist and comedian Alistair McGowan is a real all-rounder. He is best known for his impressionist TV show – The Big Impression; known as Alistair McGowan’s Big Impression for the first three series. Broadcast between 2000-2004, the sketch show featured Alistair McGowan and Ronni Ancona impersonating popular celebrities including David Beckham, Tony Blair, Gary Linker and Prince Charles. The show was one of BBC One’s top-rated comedy programmes and, amongst other awards, it won a BAFTA in 2003.
When the show ended, Alistair McGowan turned his hand to television acting; he starred in Charles Dickens Bleak House in 2005, and joined the cast of the detective-comedy series Mayo (2006), where he starred as the titular character. He has continued a successful celebrity impersonation career on BBC Radio, as well as working with Match of The Day on re-voicing video footage. His comedy show, Alistair McGowan’s Football Backchat, became a best-seller in both comedy and sports video charts after becoming a cult favourite in the late nineties. He has appeared in multiple West End shows, including Little Shop Of Horrors, where his performance saw him nominated for a Laurence Olivier award. In 2011, he made his debut as a tennis commentator at the Wimbledon Championships. Alistair McGowan both wrote and hosted the ITV comedy sports show You Cannot Be Serious (2012-present). As well as his comedy and acting career, he has written the play Timing, and co-wrote the book ‘A Matter of Life or Death or How to Wean your Man off Football’ with Ronni Ancona.
