British neurologist and middle-distance athletics competitor Sir Roger Bannister is credited as being the first human to run a sub-4-minute mile. He also set a British record with his fourth-place finish in the 1500 metre run at the 1952 Helsinki Olympics.

Amongst other distinguished honours, Roger Bannister has been awarded several honorary degrees, was knighted during the 1975 New Year Honours, was granted the Freedom of the City of Oxford in 2004, and had a commemorative British 50-pence coin cast in his honour.
