Nicola has shown an interest in Scottish politics since her youth, and at 16 she joined the Scottish National Party as the Youth Affairs Vice Convener and Publicity Vice Convener. As the youngest parliamentary candidate in Scotland, she first stood for election in the 1992 general election but failed to win the seat. Despite this and further setbacks, she was eventually appointed as Shadow Minister for Children and Education (1999-2000), Shadow Minister for Health and Community Care (2000-2003) and Shadow Minister for Justice (2003-2004).

She is now the leader of the Scottish National Party (following Alex Salmond’s resignation after the 2014 defeat of the ‘Yes’ campaign) and she also serves the fifth and current Minister of Scotland – notably, she is the first woman to hold either position. Under her leadership the SNP won a landslide victory in Scotland by gaining more seats at the 2015 general election than ever before; 56 out of 59. In response to the Brexit vote in June 2016, in which an overwhelming majority of Scotland voted to remain, Nicola Sturgeon confirmed that the Scottish government have formally agreed to draft legislation for a second Scottish independence vote, although this has been postponed pending news on the Brexit outcome.
