Mike Atherton
Authentic Signed Mike Atherton Photos, Framed & Mounted Displays
Opening batsman Mike Atherton impressed from a young age at Lancashire, and via the England U19s (he was Captain at just 16), hit his maiden first-class hundred for his county against Derbyshire at 19.
In 1989 he made his full Test debut for England in the last Ashes test of the series. After missing out on the tour of the West Indies, he returned to the side the following summer against New Zealand, hitting the first of his 16 test centuries with a patient 151, getting the better of Sir Richard Hadlee in his last series.
Mike Atherton would go on to fight more battles with the game's great fast bowlers, most famously with Allan Donald to make 99 at Headingley, and an incredible match saving 185* at Johannesburg. The rivalry culminated in a fierce encounter at Trent Bridge in 1998 where Atherton stood his ground after gloving the ball to the keeper early in the innings. Allan Donald unleashed a barrage of short, fast bowling at the opener's body, but he stood firm and ground out a match-winning 98 not out.
Mike Atherton was a tough competitor during a dark decade for English cricket. He took the captaincy at the young age of 25 and led the side in a then record 54 test matches. He retired at the end of the 2001 Ashes and is now a Sky Sports Cricket pundit and columnist with The Times.
