Judy Parfitt is best known for her highly successful role as Sister Monica Joan in the popular BBC TV series, Call The Midwife. She joined the show in 2012 as a nun who is suffering the early stages of dementia and has since become one of the show’s most loved characters. Her character has been at the centre of storylines such as her petty thefts due to dementia, her declining health and the birth of many of the babies on the show. Call The Midwife has been praised for tackling gritty, contemporary issues and remains a much loved fixture on screens to this day. The show won a National Television Award for most popular period drama (2017).

Prior to Call The Midwife, Judy Parfitt had many other notable roles, her most prominent being Mildred Layton in Jewel Of The Crown (1984), for which she received her first BAFTA nomination, and Lady Catherine de Bourgh in Pride and Prejudice (1980).

She has also turned her hand to film; most successfully, she starred alongside Scarlett Johansson and Colin Firth in Girl With A Pearl Earring (2003); she played Maria Thins and was subsequently nominated for a BAFTA for Best Actress in a Supporting Role for her performance.
