Newcastle United defender Jamaal Lascelles played for Nottingham Forest and Stevenage before being signed for Newcastle United in 2014, and made his debut in 2015 against Northampton Town in the League Cup. However, his first league start for the club was in January 2016, when he scored a goal against Watford. Under new manager Rafael Benítez, his confidence improved dramatically and he soon scored his second goal for Newcastle, in a 3-0 win against Swansea City.

Following the departure of Fabricio Coloccini, in August 2016, Jamaal Lascelles was chosen by Rafael Benítez to represent Newcastle United as their team captain, after impressing him by speaking his mind about the team’s shortcomings prior to their relegation to Championship the previous season (2015-16). In the 2016-17 season, Jamaal Lascelles made it his mission to captain the team back to the Premier League, a feat which he accomplished in one season. Jamaal Lascelles and Newcastle United also won the Professional Footballer’s Association Team of the Year Award that season. He was nominated for Premier League Player of the Month in September 2017. He is currently signed with Newcastle United until 2023; in total he has made 111 appearances for the team and scored 8 goals. (202 words)
