Gabrielle Drake’s early television appearances included The Avengers in 1967 and a small role as Inga Olsen in Coronation Street in the same year.
She rose to fame in the seventies with her portrayal of Lieutenant Gay Ellis in popular science fiction television show UFO. The show centred around the government defence team SHADO trying to prevent an alien invasion of Earth. Her character was the commander of the SHADO Moonbase and she is remembered for wearing a silver suit and a purple wig. UFO ran for a 26-episode single series from 1970 to 1973 and Gabrielle Drake appeared in around half of these.
In 1972, she joined the cast of BBC family drama The Brothers, in which she was a regular in the first four series as Jill, the wife of one of the main characters, David Hammond.
She is also known for her appearances in shows such as The Importance of Being Earnest (1985), Crossroads (1985-1987) and she returned to Coronation Street in 2009 as Vanessa. Gabrielle Drake had a stage spanning decades, and she made regular appearances in the Royal Exchange Theatre in Manchester. Notable performances there include Cinderella (1979), Lady Windermere’s Fan (1996) and Loot (2001). She fronted a one-woman show, Dear Scheherazade, as 19th Century writer Elizabeth Gaskell in 2005, 2007 and 2010.
