Child star Freddie Highmore rose to fame at the age of twelve in 2004 when he starred as Robert in Five Children and It, and consequently Peter Llewelyn Davies in Finding Neverland. One year later he was selected to play the starring role of Charlie Bucket, alongside Johnny Depp’s Willy Wonka, in the second adaptation of Charlie and the Chocolate Factory. The two had worked together on Finding Neverland, and Johnny Depp recommended him for the role as he was so impressed by his performance. His success in these roles saw him win the Critics’ Choice Movie Award for Best Young Performer for two years in a row.
His Hollywood success went from strength to strength, and in 2007 he worked alongside Robin Williams as the title character in August Rush. He then went on to play lead roles in The Spiderwick Chronicles (2008), Toast (2010) and The Art of Getting By (2011).
In 2013, Freddie Highmore branched out into television with the series Bates Motel, based on Hitchcock’s Psycho and playing the character of Norman Bates. He stayed in the role for four years and in 2016, won a People’s Choice Award for the role.
He joined the cast of ABC’s The Good Doctor in 2017, where he played the starring role, Dr. Shaun Murphy, and won a Golden Globe for Best Actor in a Drama TV series (2018). Freddie Highmore was also a co-producer on the series. The show, about a surgeon who struggles with autism and savant syndrome, was one of the most watched shows on ABC for the 2017-2018 series.
