A successful film and TV actress, Elizabeth McGovern is best known for her role as Cora Crawley in Downton Abbey, and films such as Ragtime (1981) where she played Evelyn Nesbitt, The Handmaid’s Tale (1990) and The Chaperone (2018).

Her career began in 1980 with the film Ordinary People, which was followed in quick succession by Ragtime, where she received an Academy Award nomination for her role as Evelyn. Since then, she has had leading roles in films such as Once Upon A Time In America with Robert De’Niro (1984) and the The Favour with Brad Pitt (1994); she played the leading lady in both. She has also starred alongside Helen Mirren and Ryan Reynolds in the 2015 film Woman In Gold.

She joined the cast of Downton Abbey as main character from its’ premiere in September 2010, as Cora Crawley, Countess of Grantham, wife of Robert Crawley (Hugh Bonneville) and she stayed with the show until its’ end in 2015. She was at the centre of major storylines such as the death of her daughter Sybil, and the miscarriage of her own child after an accident orchestrated by her maid. Elizabeth McGovern  was nominated for both an Emmy and a Golden Globe award for her performance in the show. She also starred as the character in the 2019 Downton Abbey film.
