Toyah Wilcox is an English singer and actor with a career spanning more than thirty years. She has had 8 top 40 singles, released over 20 albums, written two books and appeared in over 40 stage plays and 10 feature films.
Between 1977 and 1983 she fronted the band called Toyah before beginning a solo career. She began her acting career after doing some work at Pebble Mill for BBC. She was offered the leading role in the BBC Second City Firsts along with Noel Edmonds and Phil Daniels, in the course of the play she was required to sing two songs. She then went on to work at the National Theatre in London. It was around this time, she formed a band Toyah.
In 1987 Toyah was invited to make a speech at the Women of the Year ceremony expressing her views on the subject of how being disabled incites creativity. She was born with a twisted spine, clawed feet, a clubbed right foot, one leg two inches shorter than the other and no hip sockets. She endured many years of painful operations. Her condition was the cause of difficult times as school, she was bullied as she was incredibly small with a speech impediment. Her father taught her how to punch and from then on she was never bullied again. In 2007 Toyah took on the role of sponsoring the Black Country Urban Park for the People’s £50 million Big Lottery Fund. In 2008 she took part in the Great Walk to Beijing along with other celebrities to raise money for Olivia Newton-John’s cancer charity.
