Lauren Bacall was an American actress and singer.
She began her career as a model and was then advised to take a screen test for the film “To Have and Have Not” with Humphrey Bogart and was immediately signed to a 7 year contract. She was nervous during her screen test, pressing her chin against her chest to disguise her shaking and tilting her eyes upward, this came to be known as ‘The Look’. She dressed stylishly and was guided in elegance, manners and taste. She also had a voice coach to train to make her voice lower and deeper, needing to shout verses of Shakespeare for hours every day. She was unusually taller than most young actresses of the time which helped to make her stand out.
Her next film, the Big Sleep was also with Humphrey Bogart who she later married. She also starred in romantic comedies with Gregory Peck and Marilyn Monroe and later starred with John Wayne in his final film.
Following the death of Humphrey Bogart, Lauren Bacall’s career waned, and she only appeared in a few films.
