Ian McElhinney has been working in both film and television since 1981, but his is best known for his 25-episode stint as Ser Barristan Selmy in Game of Thrones. He joined the cast at the show’s inception in 2011, and his character was nicknamed Barrister the Bold. The character is hailed as a hero throughout Westeros and is the Lord Commander of the Kingsguard. The character is one of the oldest characters in the story, who has experienced many of the major political events of the past half-century.

In the fifth season of the show, the character was mortally wounded in a battle against the Sons of the Happy, and Ian McElhinney left the show. Along with his cast members, he was nominated for three Screen Actors Guild Awards for their performance on the show.

Overall, his career spans an impressive filmography, with appearances in Holby City (2003), Coronation Street (2005), and as a guest-star in Doctor Who in 2020. He also played Bill Williams in season five of Cold Feet in 2003, and Theodore Smith for three episodes of Ripper Street (2012-14). He currently plays Granda Joe in Derry Girls. Ian McElhinney has his own production company, Rathmore Productions Ltd, which he started with his wife, and he most recently finished the pilot Krypton, which details the life of Superman’s father, for the SyFy Channel.
