Daniel Mays is a household name for his roles in prime-time TV since the early 2000s. He began by appearing in a number of supporting roles, in both television shows such as Eastenders (2000) and big-budget movies Pearl Harbour (2001) and Nanny McPhee and .
He rose to fame in 2010 with his portrayal of DCI Jim Keats in fantasy crime drama Ashes to Ashes. The character, a police officer sent from Scotland to investigate DCI Gene Hunt and his department, was the main antagonist of the third series. After his departure from the show, Daniel Mays went on to star in an episode of Doctor Who (Night Terrors, 2011) where he played a father whose son was possessed by an alien.
Daniel Mays also played starring role Ronnie Biggs in the 2012 drama Mrs Biggs alongside Sheridan Smith, which told the true-life story of The Great Train Robber.
In 2016, Daniel Mays appeared in the first episode of the third season of BBC’s police corruption drama Line of Duty as Sergeant Danny Waldon, an armed response officer with childhood secrets who comes under investigation following his death. He was nominated for a BAFTA (Best Supporting Actor) for his performance in the role.
