Patricia Routledge is an English actress and singer, famous for her role as Hyacinth Bucket in the BBC series “Keeping up Appearances”.
Patricia began her career at the Liverpool Playhouse and made her Broadway debut in 1966.
She starred in many television series, appearing in a “Woman of No Importance” and in Victoria Wood As Seen on TV, a British comedy sketch series; she was nominated for the BAFTA TV award for best actress for “Talking Heads”, a series of dramatic monologues. She also appeared in Hetty Wainthropp Investigates.
She is a long standing member of the Royal Shakespeare Company, appearing in Richard III. She performed in the West End in “The Importance of Being Ernest”, “Noises Off” and was nominated for the Lawrence Olivier Award for best actress in “A Nightingale Sang”.
Patricia has also appeared in various musicals, winning the Tony Award for best actress in a musical for her role in “Darling of the Day”, she also played Queen Victoria in which she portrayed every United States First Lady.
She has also performed in many radio plays, dramas and comedy programmes and released a variety of audio books, including Wuthering Heights and Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland.
In “Keeping up Appearances”, Patricia plays a snobbish middle class social climber who insists her surname is pronounced “Bouquet”. She is constantly hampered by her lower class extended family in her attempts to gain social standing with the people she thinks are upper class.
She was awarded the OBE in the 1993 Birthday Honours, the CBE in the 2004 Birthday Honours and the DBE in 2017 for her services to theatre and charity.
